The West Piedmont Planning District Commission (WPPDC)/Danville Metropolitan Planning Organization (Danville MPO) is working with residents and safety personnel in the Danville Metropolitan Area to create a Safe Streets and Roads for All Action Plan (SS4A) through a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

This effort will improve roadway safety by significantly reducing or eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries for all roadway users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, motorists, personal conveyance and micro-mobility users, and commercial operators. Through an intensive planning process, Danville and Pittsylvania stakeholders will work with a team of consultants and WPPDC officials to identify safety needs and develop a Safety Action Plan that supports the U.S. Department of Transportation’s goal of zero roadway deaths.

“As our region continues to grow, it is important that our citizens feel safe,” said Lee Vogler, Danville City Councilman and MPO Board Member. “The Safe Streets and Roads for All Action Plan is a critical part of making that a reality. I encourage our citizens to take part in this process and help us, as leaders, shape our region’s future.”

“The safety of our citizens, whether in their vehicles, on motorcycles, bicycles or on foot, is of utmost importance for Pittsylvania County,” stated Kenneth Bowman, Chatham-Blairs District Supervisor, and member of the MPO Board, Pittsylvania County.  “I am encouraged and excited that the West Piedmont Planning District Commission/Danville Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is working on the Safe Street and Road All Action Plan with the goal of eliminating deaths on our roadways. Because our citizens travel these roads every day, their input is vital to the success of this plan, and I encourage everyone to fill out the survey.”

As part of the process, the WPPDC is seeking feedback from area residents about their roadway safety concerns through the following survey: https://eprpc.mysocialpinpoint.com/danville-mpo-ss4a/map#/.  Those who participate in the survey have the option to be entered into a raffle for an opportunity to win a gift card.

This survey kicks off an engagement process that will include stakeholder discussions, pop-up events, and a Safety Summit later this fall. Responses to the survey will complement crash data and other technical analyses to shape the Action Plan.
